Hiking vacation in the beautiful Sauerland

Hiking frees the body and mind! It is also one of the most popular leisure activities of Germans. No wonder: Hiking is not only a welcome change during a vacation for the whole family, but also one of the most effective endurance sports. Almost every muscle in the body is addressed. And, as a bonus, you can admire everything that the beautiful nature has to offer. You can climb mountains or, as a beginner, try smaller peaks first. If you prefer to travel on flat terrain, you are spoiled for choice when it comes to extensive hiking routes. But it is rewarded in any case: With unique views and impressions and, with a little luck, even with unique insights into the local flora and fauna. There are many popular hiking destinations in Germany, such as national parks, large mountain ranges or huge forests. But how about hiking in the Sauerland? If you’ve never been there, you’re definitely missing out. Let us convince you why your next vacation will definitely be hiking in the Sauerland!

Where you will stay

Of course, in addition to hiking in the Sauerland, you should also stay in a cozy and pleasant atmosphere. Nothing rounds off a vacation as much as being able to really relax and not have to worry about anything.

That’s where the Best Western Plus Hotel in tranquil Willingen comes in handy. Awarded the Holiday Check Award 2020 and equipped with great attention to detail, it offers the ideal retreat and relaxation after your extended hiking tour through the beautiful Sauerland. Here, 148 rooms await you, all of which impress with their very own charm.

A double room, a junior suite, an apartment or a beautiful gallery room on two floors are available for solo travelers or couples. Which of these beautifully decorated rooms you choose is entirely up to you.

In the double rooms of the hotel in Willingen you will find approximately 25 square meters full of amenities. A cozy bedroom with cuddly beds guarantees you sweet dreams after an adventurous day. A bright and friendly living room invites you to linger and relax.

The junior suite offers up to 30 square meters, as it is mostly identical to the double room, but has an extra seating area. Even more comfort for you if you are looking for some relaxation after hiking in the Sauerland.

The apartment is one of the largest rooms in the offered room categories. Here you and your fellow travelers have up to 45 square meters of space to feel completely comfortable. The living and sleeping areas are separated by doors, so that everyone can have their privacy here.

In the gallery room, on the other hand, the bedroom is on an additional level. Below it is the open living area. Overall, this room is very open and bright. Both levels are connected by a staircase.

All rooms have free WiFi and facilities for making your own coffee or tea. You also don’t have to do without any luxury in the bathrooms. You can leave your own hair dryer at home. Towels and bathrobes are also already included in the room rate. For balmy summer evenings, we recommend booking one of the rooms with a balcony or terrace in advance. In addition, guests of the hotel in Willingen can enjoy a large breakfast buffet free of charge before their extensive hike in the Sauerland.

All offered room types are designed for use by two to three people. If you would like an extra bed for children, for example, please let us know when booking. The provision of an additional sleeping option will then be made according to your wishes. Additional guests can then slumber on a comfortable sofa bed.

The culinary pampering program at Hotel Willingen

Physical exercise naturally also includes delicious and fresh food. Here you start with a rich start to the day. The breakfast buffet is served in the Restaurant Sudhaus. Hotel guests can use this free of charge. Non-guests are, of course, also welcome after prior reservation and payment of the breakfast price.

In the afternoon, homemade cake is served on the hotel’s summer terrace. The offer varies daily. So it’s worth indulging here as well. Hot or cold drinks can be ordered with it.

In the evening, you can choose from several offers. The beginning is made here again by the restaurant “Sudhaus” in the hotel, which offers both a dinner in the form of a buffet, as well as an a la carte service. Hotel guests can book half board when making their reservation and can then feast on the evening buffet at no extra charge. Here you will find everything from meat, fish and pasta dishes to a fresh colorful salad selection and delicious dessert creations. If you not only want to hike in the Sauerland, but also want to try typical Sauerland specialties, we recommend the Willinger Brauhaus. As the name suggests, home-brewed beer is served here. You can also choose from a large selection of regional dishes. For a slightly hipper feeling and young-at-heart hikers, a detour to LEOs Bierkeller is worthwhile. Here, in addition to beer and beer-based mixed drinks, cocktails and other long drinks are also served. In addition, you can dance here to live music every Friday and Saturday evening, if hiking in the Sauerland does not offer enough utilization.

Hiking in the Sauerland - Which spots you should not miss

Willingen and the surrounding area are not called “hiking paradise” for nothing in insider circles. All around the beautiful village of Willingen, numerous hiking trails are signposted, inviting you to extended walks. The most diverse natural scenes await you! Hike through lush green landscapes and listen to the sounds of nature. In addition, some of the hiking routes are also barrier-free, so that people with individual limitations can still enjoy and marvel at this unique nature experience. That is precisely why Willingen has more than earned its name as the “hiking capital”.

Another hiker hotspot is the Uplandsteig. With a total length of 64 kilometers, this hiking route takes you through breathtaking nature to almost 40 viewpoints, from which you will have a unique view over the beautiful Sauerland nature paradise. You will encounter many natural monuments as well as the highest peaks of the North Hessian region. The route is suitable for Nordic walking fans as well as for leisurely hikers who have a little more time in their luggage.

Our insider tip: Take the cable car up to the Ettelsberg and climb up to the Hochheide. A unique panoramic view awaits you there!
